Non-custodial vs custodial crypto payments for iGaming: which is safer?
Every crypto payment gateway makes one foundational choice: does it hold your money, or not? That single decision — custodial vs non-custodial — shapes your security exposure, your regulatory burden, and even your pricing. For iGaming operators moving real volume, it’s worth understanding precisely.
What custodial means
A custodial processor receives player deposits into wallets it controls, aggregates them, and settles to you later. It’s convenient: you see a balance, you click withdraw. But the provider is now holding your funds in hot wallets connected to the internet — and those are a target. In 2023, Alphapo, a custodial gateway serving large iGaming operators, had roughly $60M drained from its hot wallets. When a custodian is compromised, your money is what’s gone.
What non-custodial means
A non-custodial gateway never holds your funds. You configure only an extended public key (an xpub). The gateway derives a unique receive address for each deposit and watches the chain, but it has no private keys and cannot move a single cent. Deposits land directly in wallets only you control. There is no central honeypot to hack, and the provider’s security incident can’t become your loss.
The trade-off
Non-custodial shifts one job to you: you sweep and manage your own treasury (or opt into a managed-custody mode). In exchange, you remove an entire class of catastrophic risk and dramatically lighten the regulatory picture — holding third parties’ crypto is a licensed activity in most jurisdictions; watching a chain and firing webhooks is not.
How Coinflux does it
Coinflux is non-custodial by default. You paste an xpub; it issues watch-only addresses, confirms deposits in real time, and credits players through an idempotent ledger and signed webhooks — exactly once, never double. Your keys never leave your hands. For operators who explicitly want managed custody, it’s an opt-in mode, not the default. Safer by design, and flat monthly instead of a percentage of every deposit.
